Steve Howey: 'Rafael Benitez could be fan favourite at Newcastle United'

Former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey believes that Rafael Benitez will be a "fans' favourite" if he is appointed as Steve McClaren's successor.

Former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey has claimed that Rafael Benitez is likely to be a "favourite" among the supporters should he be appointed as Steve McClaren's successor.

On Friday afternoon, the Magpies confirmed the sacking of McClaren, who spent just nine months in charge at St James' Park.

Benitez has been heavily tipped to get the job, and reports have claimed that the former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss will have a meeting with Newcastle's board this afternoon.

When asked about Benitez's possible appointment, Howey told BBC Radio 5 live: "Benitez could be a fans' favourite straight away.

"Sunderland seem to have done it in the last couple of seasons, changing their manager and getting a positive result. He's got a fantastic track record, but it's a big contrast for him.

"It's not that long since he was manager of Real Madrid and if things don't go well he could be playing on a horrible, windy, wet, midweek game down at MK Dons."

It is believed that Benitez will be offered a three-year deal.
