John Carver reveals Jose Mourinho backing

Newcastle caretaker manager John Carver says that Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho backs him to earn the permanent manager's job on Tyneside.

Newcastle United caretaker boss John Carver has revealed that he has the backing of Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho to earn a permanent contract with the Magpies.

Newcastle looked good to earn a half-time draw against the Blues at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, only for Oscar to open the scoring two minutes before the break.

Diego Costa added a second on the hour mark as Mourinho's side ran out 2-0 winners, but Carver says that the Portuguese has tipped him for the manager's job if he can draw similar performances on a regular basis.

"He said to me: 'If you keep playing like this you'll get a five-year contract as Newcastle manager'," Carver told The Mirror.

"It was nice. At the end of the game he said: 'You deserve the job, you're ready for it now. I hope you get it'.

"We just laughed and he gave me another hug – he must have hugged me 10 times. He kicked the ball at me once as well, but I didn't react. I've calmed down now!"

Carver is yet to win any of the three games that he has taken charge of, losing two of them.

The Magpies' hierarchy has reportedly held talks with former Lyon coach Remi Garde over the role on Tyneside.
