Newcastle United's Steve McClaren upbeat despite winless start in Premier League

Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren admits that he is pleased with what he has seen from his players in the Premier League so far despite their failure to register a win.

Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren has revealed that he is confident his side will move up the Premier League table in the near future.

The Magpies have taken two points from their opening four matches following defeats to Arsenal and Swansea City, but McClaren's men did earn a share of the spoils in their games against Southampton and Manchester United.

The 54-year-old has declared that the standard of his side's performances has given him belief that they will pick up wins in their upcoming fixtures.

"We can feel it within the club. We feel we're slowly establishing a platform and hopefully we can start to show what we are all about," McClaren told the club's official website.

"It's been a tough start, but there has been enough evidence in the first four games to suggest we're a team that will be difficult to play against.

"We've defended well, shown a great spirit and the players have taken that on and I think the fans have appreciated that."

Newcastle face West Ham United at Upton Park on Monday.
