Newcastle United to play German pre-season tournament

Newcastle United will play a short tournament in Germany as part of their pre-season schedule ahead of the 2014-15 campaign.

Newcastle United will play a short tournament in Germany as part of their pre-season schedule this summer.

The Magpies will face Schalke 04, Malaga and one other club in August as part of the Schalke 04 Cup.

Each team will play two matches over August 2 and August 3, and the side with the most points over the weekend will be crowned champions.

All games will take play inside Schalke's Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen.

"This is a fantastic opportunity to play in such an excellent tournament as the Schalke 04 Cup," Newcastle boss Alan Pardew told the club's official website.

"We will be facing top-quality opposition and hopefully it will form part of a successful pre-season for us ahead of the 2014-15 season.

"I am very pleased it has been organised and announced early for the sake of our fans."

Newcastle return to Premier League action on Saturday when they entertain champions Manchester United.
