Newcastle United failed in their attempt to lure Steven Gerrard away from Rangers to become Rafael Benitez's successor, according to a report.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has reportedly rejected the chance to become Newcastle United's next manager.

The 39-year-old has just completed his first season in management north of the border, finishing second to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

According to The Mirror, Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has been impressed by Gerrard's work and he made an approach for the Liverpool midfield legend to succeed Rafael Benitez in the St James' Park dugout.

Ashley knew that his chances of luring Gerrard to Tyneside were slim, however, and the report indicates that his offer was swiftly declined.

Manchester City assistant manager Mike Arteta is the current favourite to take charge of the Magpies, while Roberto Martinez, Quique Sanchez Flores and Giovanni van Bronckhorst are also rumoured to be in the running.
