Newcastle United's Alan Pardew: 'We need a striker'

Pardew: 'We need a striker'

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is expecting director of football Joe Kinnear to bring a new striker to the club during the summer transfer window.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has confirmed that he is in the market for another "top striker" during the summer transfer window.

The Magpies lost Demba Ba to Chelsea last season, leaving themselves with just Papiss Cisse, Shola Ameobi and Sammy Ameobi as recognised strikers in the squad.

However, Pardew intends to add more firepower to that group this summer and is expecting new director of football Joe Kinnear to bring another forward in.

"We need to threaten the goal more and of course we need a striker, another top striker, in this place because we did not threaten to goal enough and if you don't threaten the goal enough, you are always liable then for the opposition to dictate to you," Pardew told BBC Radio Newcastle.

"They don't fear you and then you are in trouble. I am now looking at Joe. Joe is here. He said he wants to get us a striker and I am pretty sure that he wants to do that.

"Every sign he's given me is that he couldn't do any more to try to get one over the line at the minute, so myself and [chief scout] Graham [Carr], Joe and [club secretary] Lee Charnley - don't forget him in all of this - have got very important roles in securing the right player."

Newcastle have recently been linked with a move for out-of-favour Aston Villa striker Darren Bent.
