Michael McGovern signs three-year Norwich City extension

The 34-year-old has made only five appearances this season.

Norwich goalkeeper Michael McGovern has signed a contract extension until June 2021.

Northern Ireland international McGovern joined the Canaries from Scottish club Hamilton during the summer of 2016.

The 34-year-old has made only five appearances this season, none of which have been in the Sky Bet Championship as Dutchman Tim Krul has been the first choice.

McGovern, though, is glad to have his future resolved, with Norwich targeting promotion back to the Premier League as they lead the Championship by five points with seven matches remaining.

"I'm delighted to commit my future to the club," McGovern said on www.canaries.co.uk.

"I know where I'm going to be for the next couple of years now. It's a club on the up so there are very exciting times ahead,

"It was a difficult decision because obviously I haven't played as many games over the past couple of years as I would have liked but you've got to bear in mind that this is a club which is striving to get to the Premier League.

"It's a great club to be at, so I took all of that into account and in the end, I'm very happy to sign."

Norwich head coach Daniel Farke feels the veteran goalkeeper is "a great character".

The German added: "I can always trust him when I need him. He delivers outstanding professionalism, is never injured and never ill.

"He is so experienced with many games for Northern Ireland. He is a role model in terms of professionalism, so important for the whole atmosphere and mood in the dressing room."
