Port Vale put seven past Burton Albion

Lee Hughes scores a hat-trick as Port Vale close the gap on League Two leaders Gillingham with a 7-1 win at home to Burton Albion.

Port Vale have hammered Burton Albion 7-1 at Vale Park to move five points behind leaders Gillingham in the League Two table.

Lee Hughes headed the hosts into a 12th-minute lead before he doubled his side's advantage 10 minutes later from the penalty spot.

Chris Burchill then made it 3-0 moments later with a low drive from 25 yards.

Hughes completed his hat-trick with another penalty six minutes after the restart, while Tom Pope got in on the act on 56 minutes with a low strike.

Burton bagged themselves a consolation in the 77th minute as Martin Paterson fired into the top corner, but Ben Williamson made it 6-1 almost instantly.

Pope completed the rout in the final minute of normal time when he headed in at the near post.
