The home side almost took the lead after 22 minutes when Joel Ward's drive hit the crossbar, while another chance after half-time saw Liam Lawrence's effort bounce off the post to safety.
It was the visitors who took the lead with 20 minutes to play, as Andrew Taylor scored after being put in by Robert Earnshaw.
Pompey salavaged a point ten minutes from the end when Kanu directed a low header into the City net.
