Lionel Messi breaks his own personal assists record for a calendar year after setting up Neymar in Paris Saint-Germain's 1-0 win over Brest.

Lionel Messi broke a personal record for assists in Paris Saint-Germain's 1-0 victory over Brest on Sunday.

The Argentinian set up Neymar to score the only goal of the game against Brest, securing PSG a third consecutive league victory that leaves them level on points with Marseille at the top of the Ligue 1 table.

While Neymar and Kylian Mbappe may have eight and seven league goals respectively this season in comparison to the three scored by Messi, the former Barcelona man is leading his teammates for Ligue 1 assists (7) this term.

In fact, Messi has now provided 17 assists in 2022, which is more than any other player in the top five European leagues, while it also breaks his own personal record.

The Argentina international racked up 16 league assists in 2011, 2018 and 2020, but this year is the first time he has managed to reach 17.

Messi is expected to feature in Wednesday's Champions League away meeting against Maccabi Haifa, with PSG looking to build upon last week's 2-1 win over Juventus.
