Half-Time Report: Fraser Aird fires Rangers ahead

Fraser Aird scores shortly before the break to give Rangers a 1-0 lead over Stranraer in Scottish League One.

Fraser Aird scored shortly before half time to give Rangers a 1-0 lead over Stranraer in Scottish League One this afternoon.

Ahead of kickoff, a minute's silence was held in memory of former Rangers defender Sandy Jardine, who died following a battle with cancer earlier this week.

The hosts almost opened the scoring after just six minutes when Steve Smith picked out Jon Daly with a well-placed cross, but David Mitchell made a low save to keep it out.

Mitchell had to remain alert as Dean Shiels tried to tap in from an Arnold Peralta delivery, but the keeper made the top again.

Daly rattled the crossbar later in the half while trying to convert from a Peralta through-ball, while the midfielder sent his own shot over just a couple of minutes later.

Cammy Bell was called into action shortly before the break when the visitors won a free kick, but the Rangers keeper cleanly claimed Mark Docherty's curling effort.

However, a solo run from Aird saw the Rangers midfielder beat several Stranraer defenders before unleashing a powerful shot from the edge of the box to break the deadlock.
