Rangers boss Steven Gerrard stresses that his responsibility "is to keep heroes" at Ibrox as he reiterates his desire to see Alfredo Morelos given an improved deal.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has pledged to do all he can "to keep heroes" at Ibrox amid reports linking Alfredo Morelos to Bordeaux.

The 22-year-old signed from HJK Helsinki in the summer of 2017 for £1.5m and scored 18 goals for Gers last season.

In addition, Morelos has already scored twice in the Europa League qualifiers and once in the Scottish Premiership so far this campaign.

The Colombian is believed to have been the subject of £3.75m bid from the French club, but Gerrard is eager to see "arguably our best player" rewarded with a new deal.

"We can't fight to keep our best players and then not reward them with what they are worth," the former Liverpool captain told BBC Sport on Friday.

"That is one for the board to discuss, but I feel he should be looked after. My job is to manage the situation, tell him how much he is loved here.

"The fans sang his name non-stop last night [against Maribor in the Europa League]. He is a big hero of theirs and it is my responsibility to try to keep heroes here for the fans."

Morelos is a former Colombia Under-20 international who began his career at Independiente Medellin before moving to Finland in 2016.
