Reading equalise from the spot late on to earn a 1-1 draw against Stoke City.

A typical early-season encounter ends with a 1-1 draw between Reading and Stoke City.

It was a debut goal for Michael Kightly in the 34th minute, although it has to go down as a howler from Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici.

The second half started the same way as the first, with both teams cancelling each other out and overhitting crosses into the box.

However, the defenders were on top of the long-balls on display, although Stoke continued to look the more likely to score.

Although Stoke were doing most of the pressing, Reading were constantly looking to break without carving out any real chances.

Reading continued to press for an equaliser in the final 10 minutes and they were awarded a penalty on 89 minutes, Dean Whitehead being sent off for his second yellow.

Adam Le Fondre converted the penalty for Reading, earning them a 1-1 draw.
