Clarence Seedorf: 'Rafael Benitez must be given time'

Real Madrid boss Rafael Benitez needs to be given time to make his mark at the Bernabeu, according to former Los Blancos midfielder Clarence Seedorf.

Former Real Madrid midfielder Clarence Seedorf has called on the Spanish giants to give head coach Rafael Benitez time to make his mark at the Bernabeu.

On Monday, Benitez received a vote of confidence from Real Madrid president Florentino Perez following Saturday's 4-0 El Clasico defeat at home to Barcelona.

Despite the public backing, it is understood that Benitez is still under pressure in Madrid and the next couple of months could decide his fate.

Seedorf, however, has insisted that Benitez has the credentials to help Real Madrid win yet more silverware.

"[Benitez] has reached two Champions League finals with a team of much less value. He has to have time and support," Seedorf told Cadena COPE.

"When Madrid loses the Clasico it's like a funeral. These defeats hurt but we must come together to overcome things. Football is a team sport and everyone is responsible. We have to be self-critical and look for solutions at home and not outside.

"Madrid have a very competitive team. It's only a year-and-a-half since they won the Champions League. I believe strongly in this group."

Seedorf played for Real Madrid more than 150 times between 1996 and 1999.
