Anthony Stokes hopes for Republic of Ireland recall

Anthony Stokes hopes that Giovanni Trapattoni's departure will help him to earn a recall to the Republic of Ireland squad.

Celtic striker Anthony Stokes has expressed hope that he can return to the Republic of Ireland squad following the departure of Giovanni Trapattoni.

The 25-year-old was frozen out by the Italian after withdrawing from the squad for the Nations Cup in May 2011, reportedly due to tiredness.

After Trapattoni's five-year tenure came to an end on Wednesday evening, Stokes has said that he hopes to earn a recall to the international fold.

"I have said since I have been left out the squads that I would love to be back in," Stokes told the Daily Record.

"It's not down to me. I would love to be involved in the set-up but I am just concentrating on my club football and hopefully when a new manager comes in and I am still performing well, maybe I will get my opportunity."

Stokes has won four caps for Ireland.
