The Royal Blues could have pulled ahead as early as the first minute when in-form striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar shot on goal from close range, but his attempt was saved by Bremen goalkeeper Sebastian Mielitz.

The visitors broke the deadlock on 16 minutes when Aaron Hunt turned in a Zlatko Junuzovic pass.

Two minutes later Nils Petersen could have doubled Bremen's advantage had he managed to keep his shot from a Theodor Gebre Selassie cross on target.

The visitors continued to dominate proceedings at the Veltins-Arena, as Marko Arnautovic saw his attempt on the Schalke goal saved by Lars Unnerstall.

Three minutes later Sokratis Papastathopoulos was unlucky not to etch his name on the scoresheet when his header from a Hunt delivery came off the crossbar.

The tide turned in the second half and Schalke scored twice to bag maximum points.

First Roman Neustadter equalised on 59 minutes when he headed home Christian Fuchs's delivery from close range.

Then 10 minutes later Julian Draxler shot home from the left side of the box after being released by Jermaine Jones.
