Celtic defender Kieran Tierney is ruled out of Scotland's friendlies against Costa Rica and Hungary with a calf injury.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed that injured defender Kieran Tierney will not join up with the Scotland squad for their friendlies against Costa Rica and Hungary.

The 20-year-old was expected to play a part in both games over the next fortnight, having skippered his national side in their 1-0 loss to the Netherlands in November.

After sitting out Celtic's goalless draw with Motherwell at Fir Park on Sunday, though, Rodgers announced that Tierney is still struggling with a calf problem and will not be risked by Scotland.

"He had a slight issue with his calf towards the end of last week," Sky Sports News quotes him as saying. "We gave him through the week to see how he felt. It wasn't quite right. He couldn't play today and we'll see how he is for the Ross County game. He won't be travelling with Scotland."

Costa Rica travel to Hampden Park on Friday, before Scotland head to Budapest to take on Hungary four days later.
