Sheffield Wednesday beat Blackpool to exit relegation zone

Sheffield Wednesday climb out of the Championship relegation zone after ending their three-match winless run by beating Blackpool 2-0 at Hillsborough.

Sheffield Wednesday climbed out of the Championship relegation zone on New Year's Day after ending their three-match winless run.

Second-half goals from Connor Wickham and Chris Maguire helped the Owls to a 2-0 victory over Blackpool, who have now taken just one point from their last seven games.

Wickham broke the deadlock with his sixth goal in seven games on 51 minutes when his low drive from 10 yards found the net via a deflection.

Maguire doubled Wednesday's lead on the hour, tapping home from close range following a drilled cross from Wickham.

The result sees Wednesday climb to 20th in the Championship table, while Blackpool fall to 12th.
