Southampton vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers: Head-to-head record and past meetings

Ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash between Southampton and Wolves, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two clubs.

A Southampton side surely doomed to Premier League relegation welcome a Wolverhampton Wanderers team with realistic ambitions of survival on Saturday afternoon.

The Saints return to their St Mary's headquarters following a spirited effort against Liverpool last weekend, although Will Smallbone's opener proved inconsequential as the league leaders fought back to triumph 3-1.

Vitor Pereira's men are also seeking an immediate return to winning ways after the events of gameweek 28, where they had to come from behind to rescue a 1-1 draw at home to David Moyes's Everton.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 75
Southampton wins: 28
Draws: 18
Wolves wins: 29

The head-to-head history between Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers is about as even as one might expect, as from 75 previous clashes in all competitions, the Old Gold have 29 wins compared to 28 successes for the Saints.

Wolves have overtaken their Southern counterparts in the victories column thanks to a spate of recent successes in this fixture, as the West Midlands team are on a fabulous six-game winning run against Southampton, and all of those victories have come in the Premier League.

Gary O'Neil masterminded a 2-0 win over Russell Martin's Southampton in November 2024, as Pablo Sarabia and Matheus Cunha sank the Saints to give Wolves their longest winning run over a single opponent in Premier League history.

Wolves also did the double over Southampton in the 2022-23 and 2021-22 Premier League campaigns, and the Saints' most recent victory in this fixture actually came in the FA Cup, a 2-0 fifth-round win in February 2021.

Southampton have to travel even further back to April 2019 for their last Premier League win versus Wolves, overcoming Nuno Espirito Santo's side 3-1 at St Mary's as Nathan Redmond bagged a brace and Shane Long also got in on the act.

While Southampton have not won away from home against Wolves since March 2007 in the Championship, that victory was a particularly emphatic one, as Marek Saganowski netted a hat-trick in a 6-0 Molineux mauling.

That astounding success represents the joint-biggest margin of victory in this fixture, as in a 1965-66 Second Division encounter between the two teams, Southampton incredibly triumphed in a 12-goal extravaganza by nine goals to three.

Another notable meeting between Wolves and Southampton took place in just their second-ever head-to-head, where the Old Gold won 2-0 in a 1907-08 FA Cup semi-final before defeating Newcastle United in the final.
