Spain record their first ever win over France at a major tournament with a 2-0 triumph in the quarter-finals at Euro 2012.

Spain have recorded their first ever win over France at a major tournament with a 2-0 triumph in the quarter-finals at Euro 2012.

The defending champions were appealing for a penalty as early as the fifth minute in Donetsk when Cesc Fabregas, who had been selected ahead of Fernando Torres, claimed that he had been brought down by Gael Clichy in the area. However, the referee was quick to wave play on.

Following Alvaro Arbeloa's wayward effort, a dominant Spain took the lead on 18 minutes when Xabi Alonso marked a century of appearances for his country by heading in powerfully at the back post from Jordi Alba's cross.

France's first real opportunity of the half came in the form of a Karim Benzema free kick, but the striker blazed his effort well over the crossbar.

They had another set-piece from an almost identical position minutes later which Yohan Cabaye forced Iker Casillas to tip away.

Spain could have doubled their lead towards the end of the half, but Gerard Pique directed his free header off target from a corner.

In a drab second half, Vicente Del Bosque's side had the first opportunity when Alonso fired his shot wide of the French goal.

Les Bleus began to get a hold on the game with 60 minutes played with Mathieu Debuchy heading over Franck Ribery's cross.

Another chance fell to Benzema soon after, but he again smashed his drive well over Casillas' goal.

As both teams struggled to create openings, Ribery's low cross caused confusion in the Spanish area, only to be dealt with by Casillas.

French coach Laurent Blanc tried to give his side an injection of attacking intent with the introductions of Samir Nasri and Jeremy Menez, but they were unable to find an equaliser.

Instead, Alonso doubled Spain's lead from the penalty spot in injury time after Pedro had been fouled by Anthony Reveillere.

The holders will return to Donetsk on Wednesday to take on Portugal for a place in next month's final.
