Steven Pienaar: Leaving Everton felt like walking out on my child

Steven Pienaar says that leaving Everton for Spurs 12 months ago felt like "walking out of your child's life".

Steven Pienaar is delighted to be back at Everton and revealed that his Toffees departure to Tottenham Hotspur felt like walking out on his child.

The South African midfielder left Goodison Park 12 months ago, but rejoined the Merseyside club on loan minutes before Tuesday's transfer deadline.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, the 29-year-old said: "I understand [if the fans are still disappointed]. It's part of football. One moment you're playing for a club and the next you just walk out.

"It's like walking out of your child's life. To get the acceptance back you have to work and show that you do deserve to be forgiven."

Pienaar defended his decision to join Spurs but admitted that he was delighted to be back.

He said: "I still believe I made the right decision but in life, things change and I'm happy to be back here. I'm looking forward to making the most of my time here.

"Hopefully the guys will go and win the FA Cup. The supporters need something to cheer them up this season and hopefully they can qualify for the Europa League."

Pienaar made just 10 Premier League appearances during his time at White Hart Lane.
