Steven Pienaar explains that he needed to leave Tottenham in search of first-team football.

Steven Pienaar has claimed that the lack of first-team football at Tottenham Hotspur was "killing" his spirit.

The 29-year-old midfielder re-signed for Everton on a loan deal lasting until the end of the season, despite only departing Goodison Park last summer.

Pienaar wrote on Twitter: "Mixed emotions 2 leave Spurs on loan 2 Everton.
"Manager needs to make his choices, I understand, but I love playing & just can't sit so much on the bench. It was killing my spirit."

The South African playmaker has only made eight appearances in Harry Redknapp's side.
