Palmeiras president Arnaldo Tirone claims that Heurelho Gomes's high wage demands broke down talks between them and the Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper.

Palmeiras president Arnaldo Tirone has revealed that they came close to signing goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes from Tottenham Hotspur.

The Brazilian club's chief claims that they could not afford to pay the wage the 31-year-old demanded.

"Gomes was offered to us but the negotiations didn't work out," Tirone told Lancenet. "His salary is very high.

"It's similar to what happened regarding Julio Cesar (who left Inter Milan for Queens Park Rangers in the summer)."

Gomes has been at Tottenham since 2008.
