Josh Maja keen to progress with Joel Asoro at Sunderland

Sunderland youngster Josh Maja says that he will remain grounded at the Stadium of Light, despite netting the winning goal against Fulham at the weekend.

Sunderland youngster Josh Maja has admitted that he relished helping the Black Cats to a 1-0 victory over Fulham alongside fellow youngster Joel Asoro.

Moments after coming off the bench in the Championship fixture, Maja marked his league debut with the decisive goal which ended the club's year-long wait for success at the Stadium of Light.

Maja has received widespread praise for his contribution, but the teenager says that he remains fully focused on trying to help the club avoided relegation to the third tier.

The 18-year-old is quoted by the Sunderland Echo as saying: "Me and Joel are very close, we get on very well and we just want to help the club push on and stay up this year. The fans were waiting to see me and Joel play together and hopefully we can keep impressing.

"It was a bit of blur, but I'm just so pleased to get the win. I'll enjoy the moment, but I'll stay humble and grounded and just keep working to help the team."

Sunderland sit one point clear of the relegation zone in the standings.
