Wes Brown not thinking about retirement

Veteran defender Wes Brown says that the coming season is his only priority, despite entering the final year of his contract at Sunderland.

Veteran defender Wes Brown has insisted that he is looking no further than the coming season, despite entering the final year of his contract at Sunderland.

The former England international signed a four-year deal when he joined the Black Cats from Manchester United in the summer of 2011, which runs out at the end of this season.

Brown turns 35 in October, but has no intention of hanging up his boots next summer.

"I just want to play as well as I can this season, hopefully stay in the team and then see what happens," Brown told The Chronicle.

"I have played football all my life so it is not just something I am going to quit straight away if it is possible to carry on.

"I am not the sort of person who does not like football or becomes bored with it. It has been with me since I can remember, so until these legs drop off I will try to play as much as I can."

Sunderland begin their Premier League campaign with a trip to West Bromwich Albion.
