Sunderland emerge as rivals to Reading for the signature of Zambian centre-back Stoppila Sunzu, according to reports.

Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill is reportedly monitoring Zambian centre-back Stoppila Sunzu.

The 23-year-old currently plies his trade with Congolese outfit TP Mazembe, but spent a week on trial with Premier League rivals Reading last month.

A potential move to the Madejski Stadium was scuppered by problems arising with his work permit.

According to the Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats are weighing up a move for Mazembe, but have been quoted a price in the region of £4m.

Mazembe starred in his country's Africa Cup of Nations success last year, before featuring in the recent campaign in South Africa.
