Garry Monk confirms talks have begun over new Swansea City contract

Swansea City manager Garry Monk confirms that he has opened talks with the club about signing a new contract following an impressive season.

Garry Monk has confirmed that he has opened talks with Swansea City regarding details over a new contract.

The 36-year-old, who is the youngest manager in the Premier League, was tipped to drop the Swans into a relegation battle after signing a permanent contract last summer.

However, Monk has proved the critics wrong as the Welsh outfit will claim their best Premier League finish as they are currently eighth in the table on 56 points.

In today's press conference, Monk said: "I've began those contract talks with the chairman and the club and I'm looking for the future to be with Swansea. I'm looking to progress this club for the next season.

"We have opened discussions - we have said we will sit down and go into detail in the near future. Whether that's in the next few days or weeks I am not sure because we're in a busy period at the moment.

"My agent will sit down with the club, but it's just about trying to get the right time to meet and discuss it. It's like any contract, an agreement has to be reached, but I am very focused on Swansea City - that's very clear and you all know that. I have no plans to change anything."

The Swans' final games of the season are at home to Manchester City and away to Crystal Palace.
