Vancouver Whitecaps earn three points away at New England Revolution

Goals from Cristian Techera and Octavio Rivero help the Vancouver Whitecaps beat New England Revolution.

The Vancouver Whitecaps have held on to beat 10-man New England Revolution in the MLS.

New England made a fast start to the game and had the first shot on goal as Teal Bunbury let fly from the edge of the box with an effort which was saved low down, while Jose Goncalves shot marginally wide of the post minutes later.

However, the Canadian side took the lead in the 18th minute as Cristian Techera rolled the ball into the back of the net following a mistake in New England's defence.

Things got better for the visitors 10 minutes later when the referee awarded them a penalty for a foul by Andrew Farrell, who was sent off for second yellow card.

Octavio Rivero confidently stood up, and sent the keeper the wrong way to double their lead.

After the break, Kekuta Manneh went close to scoring a third as he steered a low effort marginally past the post from the edge of the box, while Tim Parker hit the post with a low drive.

Revolution gave themselves hope late on when Bunbury found the back of the net when a rebound fell perfectly for him to tap in.

They came close to grabbing an equaliser when Juan Agudelo got his head to a set piece, which missed the goal by inches, but their efforts weren't enough as Vancouver held on to win.
