Slavisa Jokanovic named new Watford head coach

Watford confirm the appointment of Slavisa Jokanovic as the club's new head coach.

Watford have confirmed the appointment of Slavisa Jokanovic as the club's new head coach.

The 46-year-old Serbian replaces Billy McKinlay, who leaves the Hornets with immediate effect following just over one week in charge.

Jokanovic's coaching career has seen him enjoy spells with Partizan, Levski Sofia and Hercules.

The former midfielder, who spent two years with Chelsea, guided Partizan to the double in both 2008 and 2009 before winning the Thai Premier League title with Muangthong United in 2012.

Watford owner Gino Pozzo told the club's official website: "Our job is always to act in the best long-term interests of this football club. There can be no compromise on this - whatever the circumstances.

"I fully support and endorse the view from our technical staff that, given the talented squad which has been assembled and our position in the league, an experienced head coach with a winning pedigree is of primary importance to help ensure the success we are all striving for.

"The supporters of Watford have always been very understanding towards our project here and I am certain they will continue to do everything they can to support the new coach and his squad."

Watford, who are currently in third place in the Championship table, return to action on October 18 when they travel to promotion rivals Sheffield Wednesday.
