Mainz 05 edge past Werder Bremen

Mainz 05 beat Werder Bremen 3-2 away from home in their Bundesliga clash at Weserstadion.

Mainz 05 have claimed a 3-2 win over Werder Bremen in their Bundesliga meeting at Weserstadion.

Nicolai Muller gave the visitors the lead early on when he latched onto Sebastian Polter's threaded pass before lifting the ball over Sebastian Mielitz.

Polter wasted a chance to double their lead moments later when his low drive was kept out by the keeper.

In the 17th minute of the match, Mainz scored their second goal. Zdenek Pospech saw his attempted cross hit the bar and from the rebound Shinji Okazaki was on hand to fire home.

Mainz made sure of the win when they added a third goal midway through the second half. Stefan Bell went on a driving run down the right hand side before picking out Okazaki in the middle, with the striker sliding the ball into the net.

Eljero Elia pulled a goal back for the home side five minutes from time after slotting home from close range, before Franco di Santo ensured it would be a nervous finish for the visitors as he headed in his side's second.

Despite Werder Bremen's late fightback, Mainz held firm to record their sixth league win of the season.
