Roberto Martinez hopes Malky Mackay will "settle in" at Wigan Athletic

Everton boss Roberto Martinez is hopeful that Malky Mackay can get to winning ways quickly following his appointment as Wigan Athletic manager.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has described Wigan Athletic's Dave Whelan as a "dream of a chairman", despite facing criticism for appointing under-fire Malky Mackay as the club's new manager.

Martinez developed a strong relationship with Whelan during his four-year coaching stint at the DW Stadium before he moved on to Goodison Park last year.

Yesterday, Whelan defended his decision to appoint Mackay as Uwe Rosler's replacement, despite the Scotsman being the subject of an investigation by the Football Association for allegedly sending text messages of a racist, homophobic and sexist nature.

"Wigan is an exceptional football club," Martinez told reporters. "What they have achieved from a dream of a chairman is incredible. I hope the new manager can settle in and get a winning streak going.

"Malky Mackay is a man who is going to enjoy the challenge. I think if there is an investigation, whatever the talk is unnecessary."

Anti-discrimination organisation Kick It Out have criticised Wigan's decision to appoint Mackay.
