Swindon Town shock Wigan Athletic in the third round of the FA Cup

Swindon Town pulled off a major FA Cup upset with a third round victory over Premier League side Wigan Athletic today.

Goals from Alan Connell and Paul Benson ensured that Paulo Di Canio's men saw out a famous victory, despite going behind to a Callum McManaman strike.

The match started quietly, with only a Ronan Murray shot for Swindon seriously troubling either keeper, until it was brought to life in the 35th minute.
Callum McManaman, who had looked Wigan's most dangerous player, was brought down in the box by Aden Flint, giving the referee no option but to award a penalty.

Ben Watson stepped up for the Latics, but his placed shot came back off the left post. Fortunately for Wigan, it fell to the feet of McManaman, who swept it home.

Swindon immediately started pressing for an equaliser, and almost found it in the 38th minute but for a fine save by Ali Al-Habsi.

The in-form shot-stopper could do nothing two minutes later, however, as Alan Connell levelled the sides with a good header.

Swindon then got the stroke of luck often needed for a good cup run as a long range shot from Matt Ritchie deflected off Paul Benson and past Al-Habsi into the back of the net.
