Doncaster Rovers boss Dean Saunders emerges as the preferred candidate to be the new Wolverhampton Wanderers manager following Stale Solbakken's sacking earlier today.

Wolverhampton Wanders have identified Dean Saunders as their preferred candidate for the vacant managerial post and will make an official approach in the next 24 hours, according to reports.

Stale Solbakken was relieved of his duties tonight after an FA Cup defeat to non-league side Luton Town this afternoon.

Wolves chairman Jez Moxey is thought to be keen on Saunders and will ask Doncaster Rovers for permission to speak to the former Wales international before the weekend is out.

Solbakken lasted just eight months at Molineux, with the promotion favourites lying in 18th place in the Championship table.
