Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote has been arrested on suspicion of fraud in relation to driving offences.
The 26-year-old had his car seized by police near the Magpies' training ground on Tuesday.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "At around 1.30pm on Tuesday, a car was stopped on Benton Park Road, Newcastle, and a 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of fraud in relation to driving offences."
It is understood that enquires into the matter are ongoing, but neither Tiote nor Newcastle have yet commented on the subject.
Ivorian Tiote, who joined Newcastle in August 2010, has recently returned from Africa Cup of Nations duty.
