Wakefield Trinity Wildcats come back to beat Leigh Centurions

Lee Smith scores a late drop goal as the Wakefield Wildcats beat Leigh Centurions by a point.

The Wakefield Trinity Wildcats staged a second-half comeback to beat Leigh Centurions by a point in the Super League Super 8s.

Wakefield scored an early try through Lee Smith, who was found on the wing and crossed in the corner, before Fuifui Moimoi powered his way over the line to hit back for Leigh.

This gave the hosts confidence, and they took the lead through Jonny Powenall, who juggled the ball before slamming it down in the corner before Liam Kay latched onto the end of a grubber kick and touched it down over the line.

Wakefield responded just before the break through Jacob Miller, but they trailed by six points at half time.

Both sides squandered possession easily in the second half, but Miller helped himself to his second try of the game to help bring the scores level.

However, Wakefield's momentum was lost when Michael Sio was sent to the sin bin on the hour-mark, but they took the lead a few minutes later through Lee Smith's drop goal.

Leigh pushed hard late on, but Wakefield hung on to claim the win.
