Ben Lam: 'Scotland game helped us'

New Zealand's Ben Lam believes that his side's narrow victory over Scotland yesterday has put them in a good position for the second day of action at Ibrox.

New Zealand's Ben Lam has claimed that his side's narrow victory over Scotland in the Commonwealth Games rugby sevens yesterday has put them in "good stead" for the second day.

The All Blacks almost fell to their first ever defeat at the Games when the hosts rallied from a 17-point deficit at half time to bring it back to 17-14 at Ibrox.

However, the defending champions held on despite having just five men on the field, and Lam believes that the hard-fought victory helped his side to hold off another spirited challenge from Kenya this afternoon.

"We knew it was going to be tough. Anything can happen, so all we could do was prepare for the game ahead, and I think we did that pretty well," Lam told Sports Mole.

"I think yesterday against Scotland we had the crowd against us, so we had to dig deep, and I think it put us in good stead for today. Today is going to be tough, so I think having that game helped us.

"We've got another game to focus on, so we'll worry about our next game for now and if that goes well then we'll worry about the next one after that."

Lam scored two tries in the 19-7 victory over Kenya, taking his overall tally for the tournament to five.

New Zealand will face Australia in the medal semi-final later this evening.
