Dan Braid soon got Sale back in contention after squeezing over in the corner, but Danny Cipriani missed the conversion from out wide to leave the visitors two points adrift.
The visitors took the lead for the first time with just over 10 minutes to play when Cipriani booted the ball downfield, which Johnny Leota gathered to run over.
Fly-half Rory Clegg added Newcastle's only points of the second half with a penalty, but the home side were unable to find their rhythm from the first half in the second 40 minutes.
The win moves Sale up to sixth in the table, while Newcastle remain 10th.
