Czech Republic retain Davis Cup

The Czech Republic successfully defend the Davis Cup with a narrow 3-2 win over Serbia in Belgrade.

The Czech Republic have retained the Davis Cup with a narrow 3-2 win over Serbia in Belgrade.

The two nations were tied at 2-2 before Radek Stepanek defeated Dusan Lajovic in straight sets to give the Czechs the triumph.

The visitors started the day 2-1 in front thanks to their victory in the doubles on Saturday night.

However, the final was levelled at 2-2 early on Sunday when Novak Djokovic saw off Tomas Berdych 6-4 7-6(5) 6-2.

It was left between the veteran Stepanek and the inexperienced Lajovic to battle it out for the title, and it was the former who came through 6-3 6-1 6-1 to clinch the spoils for his country.
