Stanislas Wawrinka recovered from a set down to beat compatriot Roger Federer in the final of the Monte Carlo Masters this afternoon.

Federer, a three-time losing finalist in the competition, made inroads toward ending his hoodoo in the principality by securing a 6-4 win in the opening set.

Nothing could separate the Swiss Davis Cup teammates in the second set, however, as the duo forced a tie-break after registering six games apiece.

Wawrinka inflicted a break of serve on the 32-year-old en route to a 4-1 lead in the tie-break, before eventually leveling up the match to force a deciding set.

Federer lost on his service game twice in the opening three games as the 29-year-old moved half-way toward victory with a 3-0 lead, before the world number four's resistance waned as Wawrinka claimed the final set 6-2 to win the title.
