Jo-Wilfried Tsonga comes through Borna Coric test

Defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga overcomes teenager Borna Coric to reach the Rogers Cup second round in Montreal.

Defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has progressed through to the second round of the Rogers Cup after seeing off the challenge of Borna Coric.

Last year, Tsonga enjoyed one of the best weeks of his career in securing the title at the Masters Series tournament in Canada, and he has made a positive start to this campaign with a 6-4 6-4 win over the young Croatian.

After the match was suspended after just three games on Monday night, Tsonga returned the stronger of the two players and after winning all but one point behind his first serve, he was able to steal the decisive break to move ahead.

Coric, tipped by many to be a future world number one, established an early lead in the second only for Tsonga to get back on level terms in the sixth game.

Tsonga soon moved to within one game of the match and with Coric serving to stay in it, he made his move to seal a second-round encounter with Roberto Bautista Agut.
