Jeremy Chardy has claimed a straight-sets victory over Bernard Tomic in the first round of the Shanghai Masters.

The Frenchman, who is ranked 38th in the world, saw off the Australian world number 51 7-5 6-2 to reach the next round.

Chardy will now face Nicolas Almagro for a place in the third round.

Spanish 15th seed Almagro had earlier beaten Japanese qualifier Go Soeda 7-5 6-2 to progress.
