Aljaz Bedene through after Ernests Gulbis withdrawal

British number two Aljaz Bedene is through to the US Open second round after Ernests Gulbis withdrew from their match at Flushing Meadows.

Aljaz Bedene has earned a place in the second round of the US Open after opponent Ernests Gulbis withdrew from their match midway through the third set.

The British number two had looked in trouble after dropping the first set to the Latvian, but he responded by levelling the match at one set all.

Bedene was on course to take the third after establishing a three-game lead, but Gulbis allowed him to progress through to the last 64 after pulling out of the contest with the score at 3-6 6-4 3-0.

The 26-year-old will play Donald Young in the next round after the American upset Gilles Simon earlier on Tuesday.
