Johanna Konta qualifies for US Open

Britain's Johanna Konta reaches the main draw at the US Open after beating Austria's Tamira Paszek in the final qualifying round.

Britain's Johanna Konta has secured a spot in the main draw for next week's US Open after winning her qualification match against Tamira Paszek in three sets.

The world number 96, who has not lost since her exit from Wimbledon, defeated the Austrian 6-4 3-6 6-2 to join compatriots Heather Watson and Laura Robson in the singles draw.

Naomi Broady was unable to join the 25-year-old, losing in three sets to Estonia's Anett Kontaveit, while Brydan Klein was beaten in straight sets by Australian Matt Ebden.

There was also disappointment for Kyle Edmund, who let a 5-2 lead in the deciding set slip to suffer a surprise defeat to Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka.

Edmund, who is ranked 28 places above Nishioka, had three match points, but his 19-year-old opponent staged a comeback to prevent the Briton joining Andy Murray, James Ward and Aljaz Bedene in the men's draw.
