Serena Williams wins seventh Wimbledon crown by beating Angelique Kerber

Serena Williams wins her 22nd Grand Slam title by beating Angelique Kerber in the Wimbledon final.

Serena Williams has won her seventh Wimbledon crown after seeing off Angelique Kerber in straight sets in the final this afternoon.

The world number one now has 22 Grand Slam titles to her name, which equals Steffi Graf's record of the most major wins among women in the Open era.

Williams faced a tough prospect in Kerber given that the German defeated her to win the Australian Open in January, but the American pro managed to pass the test by sealing a 7-5 6-3 win in just over one hour and 20 minutes.

The final was easy on the eye for spectators at the All England Club as both players were on top form, with games going by the way of serve early in the first set.

Williams looked to be struggling slightly with the left-hand serve, but she pumped herself up after converting a forehand volley before holding.

The first break of the match, which happened to be set point, went Williams's way as her backhand forced Kerber to loop the ball into the net.

The second set was tight, and Kerber tried to take control of the match by manoeuvring her opponent around the court, but after she failed to convert a break point, Williams took advantage of the situation.

The Michigan-born tennis star earned three points on the bounce and broke serve when Kerber's backhand shot went wide.

It was a comfortable final game for Williams as she wrapped up the match to put her name in the history books.
