Defending champion Petra Kvitova is knocked out of Wimbledon in the quarter-finals by Serena Williams.

Serena Williams knocked defending champion Petra Kvitova out of Wimbledon at the quarter-final stage this afternoon.

With the roof employed on Centre Court, four-time winner Williams began the stronger of the two players.

The American required just one break of the Kvitova serve to wrap up the opening set 6-3 in just over 30 minutes.

The second set was a more even contest, with very little to choose between both players.

With the score 5-4 in Kvitova's favour, she had the chance to break Williams's serve for the first time in the match. However, Williams held her nerve to level the set up at five games apiece.

She then broke Kvitova in the very next game, before producing three aces to book her place in the semi-finals at SW19.

The 30-year-old will now face either Victoria Azarenka or Tamira Paszek for a place in the final.
