Wright: 'Arsenal players owe Wenger'

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright challenges the current side to repay Arsene Wenger's faith by producing a performance against Bayern Munich tonight.

Ex-Arsenal striker Ian Wright has declared that the current crop owe manager Arsene Wenger a performance against Bayern Munich in the Champions League tonight.

The Gunners slipped out of a cup competition to lower-league opposition for the second time this season in their last match, a 1-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup.

Wright thinks that complacency crept in on Saturday following Wenger's team selection and wants his former side to respond quickly against the Bundesliga leaders at the Emirates this evening.

He told The Sun: "I believe the Blackburn result could have been avoided had Wenger taken the FA Cup seriously and then started worrying about the European game on Sunday.

"Putting Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott and Santi Cazorla on the bench sent out a negative message. As a former player, you know that if a manager is not that fussed about a competition, that attitude creeps into the team.

"My former manager approaches tonight's clash with Bayern Munich under unbelievable pressure and I hope the Arsenal players he has shown such faith in are aware of this. It's time they repaid Wenger with a massive performance."

Wright also insisted that Arsenal are capable of springing a surprise against Bayern if their best players perform to their maximum over two legs.
