Danny Welbeck: 'Nobody can criticise my finishing'

Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck says that comparisons to Gunners legend Thierry Henry should not be made following his hat-trick against Galatasaray.

Danny Welbeck has said that he should be judged on his goalscoring record playing through the middle at Arsenal rather than out wide during his time at Manchester United.

The 23-year-old left Old Trafford to join the Gunners in the summer having failed to nail down a spot in his favoured position under Louis van Gaal.

However, Welbeck has enjoyed a fine start to life in North London, scoring six goals in the same number of games since joining his new club last month.

"People can say I've not scored enough goals, but you stick the best strikers on the wing in a four-man midfield and see if they score goals," Welbeck is quoted as saying by The Mirror. "If you're getting goals and getting a run of games in your preferred position, your confidence is going to grow and performances are going to grow as well.

"Nobody can really criticise my finishing because they don't really see me playing in a forward position too often. But now I am getting into these positions I want to be sticking the ball in the back of the net. I'm sure it's the same with every other striker.

His first senior hat-trick on Tuesday night against Galatasaray led many to compare the England international to Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, with Welbeck adding: "You can't start making comparisons like that. Obviously Thierry Henry is someone I've looked up to ever since I started playing football."

Arsenal are currently fourth in the Premier League table.
