Merseyside Police and the FA launch investigations into Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira's altercation with an Everton fan on Thursday evening.

Merseyside Police and the FA have launched investigations into Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira's altercation with an Everton fan on Thursday evening.

The incident occurred following Palace's 3-2 defeat at Goodison Park, which confirmed Everton's Premier League survival in dramatic circumstances.

Jean-Philippe Mateta and Jordan Ayew had given the Eagles a 2-0 lead at half time, but Frank Lampard's side produced a remarkable comeback in the second half with goals from Michael Keane, Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

A small pitch invasion occurred following the match-winning goal, but after a lengthy delay, play resumed, before home supporters flooded the pitch upon the final whistle to celebrate the club's survival.

Video footage released after the game appeared to show an Everton fan tormenting Vieira as he attempted to make his way to the Palace dressing room - across the opposite side of the pitch from the Goodison Park dugouts.

The footage appears to show the 45-year-old kicking out at the supporter in retaliation, before being ushered away by other Everton supporters.

On Friday morning, Merseyside Police confirmed they had made seven arrests following reports of disorder in the aftermath of the match, whilst investigations from themselves and the Football Association had also been launched into the altercation, as well as the pitch invasion as a whole.

The incident on Merseyside comes in a week full of controversial pitch invasions, with Swindon Town alleging physical and verbal abuse in their playoff defeat at Port Vale on Thursday, as well as a Nottingham Forest fan being jailed for assaulting Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp following their playoff encounter on Tuesday night.
