England legend Wayne Rooney has been denied the opportunity of a Three Lions send-off during the side's friendlies against Germany and Brazil this month.

Everton striker Rooney retired from international football in August after scoring 53 goals in 119 appearances for the national team.

The FA has since ruled out a send-off for the forward during England's friendlies this month, although Rooney could appear in a non-playing tribute next March when England look likely to face Italy.

"It's never been done before and we have obviously had World Cup winners before," manager Gareth Southgate told reporters following Rooney's international retirement.

"So other people have to make the decision but, absolutely, we should be recognising his career.

"I'm sure in the future there could be some involvement with England."

Rooney has scored four Premier League goals for the Toffees this season, with his latest strike coming in Everton's 5-2 loss to Arsenal on Sunday.
