Alan Shearer: 'Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane are England's only striking options'

Ex-England striker Alan Shearer claims that the team currently has just Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane as their specialist forwards.

Former England striker Alan Shearer has suggested that the Three Lions currently have just Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane as their specialist goalscorers.

Rooney has previously been tipped to play behind the striker, but he is expected to lead the line against Switzerland in Euro 2016 qualifying this evening as he aims to become England's record goalscorer.

Shearer has said that England are lacking the sort of striking options that were available when he represented the national team.

"A lot of players want to play in the number 10 role rather than being a main striker," Shearer told the Daily Star. "There is not so much pressure in the 10 role. You don't really have to score goals or be the focal point. You can get away with it a bit.

"When I look back to myself in my prime, you had Robbie Fowler, Andy Cole, Teddy Sheringham, Matt Le Tissier, Les Ferdinand and Chris Sutton.

"I look around now and other than Rooney and Kane, that is all it is at the moment. There is not a lot around."

Rooney has netted 49 goals in 106 England games, while Kane has scored two goals in his three international appearances.
